Armed police and bomb squad called to incident at Somerset home

Armed police seized weapons and drugs following a search of a home in Portishead.

Police – including specially trained firearms officers – were called to a property at Slade Road just before 8pm on Friday, August 27 to concerns for the welfare of a man.

A search of the property was carried out and air powered weapons, along with a small quantity of class B drugs, were found.

The Explosives Ordnance Team was also called to safely dispose of a flare and a smoke device.

Nobody was evacuated during the incident.

A man was arrested in South Wales in connection with the incident.

He has been released under investigation and referred to the care of mental health services.

A spokesman for Avon and Somerset Police said: “At just before 8pm on Friday, August 27, we received a report regarding concerns about the welfare of a man.

“Due to the nature of the information received, a search warrant was obtained and officers, including specially trained firearms officers, attended a property in Slade Road, Portishead.

“A small quantity of class B drugs, and what are believed to be air powered weapons were located and seized.

“A man was initially arrested in the South Wales area in connection with the incident, before being released under investigation and referred to the care of mental health services.

“At this stage, we don’t believe there is any wider risk to the public.”
