Bristol’s biggest cinema is closing down next week

Bristol’s premier city centre cinema is to close at the end of the month, Bristol Live can reveal. The Showcase Cinema de Lux in Cabot Circus will screen its final film on November 30.

Customers who make inquiries about booking tickets for upcoming films in December are being told the cinema is no longer taking any more bookings and they are being directed to the city’s other Showcase cinema at the Avonmeads Retail Park in St Philips. Showcase’s website is not allowing bookings for the city centre cinema beyond November 30, with all future dates greyed out.

One customer, Gordon Bottoms, from Lime Kiln Road, called on Cabot Circus management to find a compromise. “Can I be the first to register my dismay at the closure?” he wrote in a letter to the Bristol Post.

“Many of the surrounding restaurants have clauses in their leases which assume that the multi-screen cinema is located in Cabot Circus and draws in the crowds,” he said. “Without this, it is likely that some of these restaurants would be forced to close and that Cabot Circus will lose much of its attraction as a shopping, eating and entertainment centre,” he added.

Bristol Live has contacted Showcase Cinemas to ask about the reasons for the closure, and a response is awaited. Bosses at Cabot Circus have also directed Bristol Live to Showcase.

A source close to staff at the Showcase Cinema de Lux claimed that, with ticket sales slow to recover after the Covid lockdowns of 2020 and 2021, the final decision was taken following an increase in the rent being charged by Cabot Circus to Showcase.

The 14-screen Showcase Cinema de Lux is the biggest in Bristol, with the same number of screens as the Showcase at Avonmeads. It was one of the key ‘anchor attractions’ of Cabot Circus when the shopping centre opened in 2008.

Its closure next Thursday, November 30, will follow just four days after the the closure this Sunday of the Cineworld cinema at Hengrove Park in South Bristol.
