Belgrave Middleway, a main throughfare in central Birmingham, is shut in both directions due to the investigation. Alternative routes are heavily congested as a result and residents are warned “to follow officers’ instructions”.
A spokesman for West Midlands Police said: “Belgrave Middleway from the Belgrave Interchange towards Stratford Road is closed in both directions after an abandoned suspicious item was found by maintenance workers.
“The road has been closed as a precautionary measure while the item is examined.
“People in the area should follow instructions of our officers at the scene.”
Belgrave Middleway makes up part of the inner ring road around the city centre.
Drivers should use the ring road in the other direction to reach part of the city centre, Birmingham Live reports.
This will take motorists through Deritend and around Eastside instead.
But motorists travelling anticlockwise from the Five Ways area should use diversions along Calthorpe Road, St James Road and Wellington Road through to Bristol Road.
They then should use Balsall Heath Road eastwards towards the A435.
It is unclear how long the main road will be closed for today.
