Morning cup, bean juice, mud, dirt, lifeblood, rocket fuel, long black; these are all nicknames and slang for a drink that has recently become more popular than tea in the UK, coffee. The morning for many of us is not complete without a cappuccino, espresso, flat white or a vegan rice milk macchiato. But is there more to coffee than just milk, froth, caffeine and confusing the local barista? Could coffee play a role in saving your life?
A new study from China suggests that coffee could play a role in reducing your risk of developing prostate cancer.
The study, made up of sixteen prospective cohort studies, including over 1,000,000 people, over 57,000 of whom had prostate cancer found: “Higher coffee consumption was significantly associated with a lower risk of prostate cancer”.
This will be good news for the coffee drinking male readers amongst you.
Prostate cancer is one of the most common cancers amongst men in the UK.
Between 2016 and 2018 there were over fifty-thousand new cases according to Cancer Research UK.
What makes prostate cancer tricky to deal with is that it’s not clearly linked to any preventable risk factors.
This isn’t to say that if you’re a man and you don’t drink coffee that you’re going to get prostate cancer.
What it does say is that if you are worried about getting prostate cancer, or have a history of it in your family, there is something you can do.
This isn’t the first time that coffee has been shown to have some health benefits.
In the past coffee has been shown to lower the risk of cardiovascular health disease and type 2 diabetes.
The drink may also help to reduce instances of the most common type of dementia, Alzheimer’s and other diseases such as Parkinson’s, Liver cancer and colorectal cancer.
Furthermore, thanks to the caffeine in the drink, coffee also reduces tiredness and increases energy.
On prostate cancer, if you are concerned that you have the condition, then there are some symptoms to look out for.
This includes needing to pee more frequently during the night, straining or taking a long time to pee, weak flow of your pee, and feeling that your bladder has not emptied fully.
Look out for blood in your urine or blood in your semen.
Coffee then, can play a role not just in preparing you for your meeting, fictional or otherwise in the morning, but can help lower your chances of developing a very non-fictional condition.
