Regulators have given the green light for two brands of progesterone-only contraceptive pills to be made available over the counter. Buyers will still need to have a consultation with a pharmacist.

Dr Edward Morris, President of the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists, said the move would give women more control over reproductive health.

He said: “This is a huge win for women and girls who will no longer face unnecessary barriers when accessing this contraception.

“Too many women and girls were struggling to access basic services.

“Consequences of this include an increase in unplanned pregnancies, which can result in poorer outcomes for women and babies.”
