Covid case count in Bristol as England reverts to Plan A


Two more people have died with Covid-19 in the Bristol region as restrictions begin to ease across the country.

The city of Bristol and North Somerset each recorded one new Covid-related death in the last 24 hours, according to the latest daily figures.

It comes after Sajid Javid gave a press conference confirming major Covid-19 rules will change, starting from today (Thursday, January 20).

Two more deaths in the Bristol region brings the total number of fatalities in our area to 1,426 since the pandemic began.

Meanwhile Bristol saw 693 new cases in the 24-hour period recorded today, with a further 489 cases in South Gloucestershire and 343 in North Somerset, Government data shows.

That brings the total number of infections in all three local authority areas since the beginning of the pandemic to 220,366.

Bristol’s Covid rate remains high at 888.9 cases per 100,000 people, but not as high as the national rate of 922.

More deaths and positive cases in Bristol have been recorded amid a major shift in Covid rules in the country.

Working home guidance has now been lifted and, from today, school pupils in classrooms will no longer have to wear a face covering.

Other rules concerning Covid passports and face masks for the public are due to be lifted from next Thursday (January 27).

The number of positive test results in each area of the Bristol region since the pandemic began is recorded below, with new positive test results recorded today in brackets:

  • City of Bristol: 113,473 (+693)

  • North Somerset: 42,806 (+343)

  • South Gloucestershire: 64,087 (+489)

The number of deaths recorded in each area of Bristol since the beginning of the pandemic is as follows, with new deaths within 28 days of a positive test in brackets:

  • City of Bristol: 626 (+1)

  • North Somerset: 384 (+1)

  • South Gloucestershire: 416 (-)

Nationally a further 107,364 cases were recorded in the UK today, and another 330 people have died within 28 days of a positive test.
