Covid panic as hospital declares ‘critical incident’ over patient surge – new ward planned

Derriford Hospital, Plymouth has declared a “critical incident” as it is overwhelmed with coronavirus patients. Surgical staff at the hospital are being asked for “urgent help” covering extra shifts, with more Covid wards being planned to cope with the spike in hospitalisations. Two patients died at the hospital on Wednesday after testing positive for Covid.

By Wednesday next week, Derriford Hospital is expecting more than 60 Covid inpatients.

On August 25, 141 new cases and two deaths within 28 days of a positive test were reported in Plymouth.

Between August 9 and August 15, 41 went into hospital with Covid.

There were 48 patients in hospital with coronavirus on August 17, with 10 on ventilators.
