ITV brings us more cases for Morse as their critically-acclaimed detective drama, Endeavour returns for its eighth series.

Over six million viewers across the country tuned in to season seven of the Morse spin-off in 2020, kept on the edge of their seats by the escalating drama which culminated in the death of Endeavour’s lover, Violetta, at the end of the season.

This upcoming season picks up just a couple of months after the tragedy and we see the Oxford detective unravel an increasingly intense string of crimes while also scrambling to contain his grief.

Here’s everything else you need to know (spoilers and all) about the Endeavour’s season eight comeback.

When is the Endeavour season eight release date?

Despite pandemic-related setbacks, filming for the series finally wrapped up in Oxford in June 2021. Shortly after, the show’s creator Russel Lewis told the Radio Times that “it would be lovely if it went out this year”.

ITV have since confirmed that Endeavour season eight will air at some point this autumn but as of yet, there is no specific release date.

What will happen in Endeavour season eight?

In season eight of Endeavour, Morse is faced with what lead actor Shaun Evans has described as an “incredibly complicated” battle with alcoholism.

Despite his internal world falling apart bit by bit, he still manages to pull himself together at the last minute to solve progressively high-stakes cases.

As usual, the show makes use of the 1970s Oxfordshire backdrop to evoke a sense of nostalgia and disquietude.

We’re thrown right into back into the thick of things in an explosive first episode that makes reference to The Troubles in Northern Ireland when Morse and Thursday are confronted with two seemingly disconnected cases of a bomb going off in an Oxford college and a footballer receiving death threats.

The ante is upped further in episode two when the detectives must deal with multiple dead bodies and a few naked bodies in a case linked to an eclectic Cowley nudist retreat called Paradise court.

Much to his displeasure, Morse’s past also rears its head in the form of his stepmum, Gwen (played by Lynda Rooke) and a young, freshly fatherless boy who reminds Morse of himself.

Old flame, Joan Thursday must then come to Morse’s rescue as she notices the extent to which the young detective is spiralling but a snowstorm splits the Oxford CID exasperating Joan’s challenge.

How many episodes will there be in Endeavour season 8?

Season eight of Endeavour consists of three feature-length episodes, which will bring the series up to its 33 rd episode putting it on par with the original Inspector Morse series which began filming in 1987.
