Danny Makkelie is the man in charge of England’s Euro 2020 semi-final against Denmark at Wembley this evening (July 7).

The 38-year-old is from the Netherlands and has been a FIFA-listed referee since 2011, reports Wales Online.

This is his first senior major international tournament and the biggest night of his career so far.

During this year’s tournament, he has so far overseen four games, which included England’s 2-0 win over Germany.

Makkelie was also chosen for the opening game between Turkey and Italy, and Russia’s 1-0 win over Finland in Group B. He has booked 12 players so far but is yet to send anyone off.

His most high-profile game before the Euros was the 2020 Europa League final between Sevilla and Inter Milan, during which he showed six yellow cards – including one to the Italian side’s manager Antonio Conte.

Makkelie was also the man in the middle for the first leg of Chelsea’s Champions League semi-final against Real Madrid this year, booking six players – with five of them going to the Spanish giants in a game which finished 1-1 at the Bernabeu.

He has been a video assistant referee in some high-profile games, such as the 2018 World Cup final between France and Croatia, the all-English 2019 Champions League final between Tottenham and Liverpool and 2016 FIFA Club World Cup final between Real Madrid and Kashima Antlers.
