A difficult evening and perhaps you’re disappointed that you didn’t take your early chances…
It was difficult as in the result but I think the performance was pretty good, again. We rue chances not taken. As an away side like we’ve been and you come away with three points I keep it in perspective by looking at what the performance was like.
I think we performed well and created lots of chances but didn’t quite find the way in tonight. I’ve been happy with the way we’ve approached the games at home but clearly one point out of two games at home isn’t what we’re looking for, probably not what we deserved but that’s what it is and you have to get on with it.
The crowd were really up for it tonight…
Yes, the crowd were great. Our fans tonight were brilliant, they stuck with the players, they tried to lift us right to the last moment and even when we made a few iffy decisions they stuck with us. I think that’s good but hopefully they can see that the players are committed and we are experiencing a difficult time at home, of course, but I think we deserve more than we have, that’s life and we’ll get on with it.
Do you think Swansea got a bit lucky with the goal, with it hitting the post and coming back to the same man?
No, he was sharp enough to finish it. I don’t need to make observations about our opponent tonight. It’s more important that I make reflections and give you opinions on ourselves and it’s not about excuses it’s about being realistic. We created enough chances to win the game tonight, maybe to win two games but we didn’t take them. Having said that, I’m pleased with the players that we have.
People keep asking me if we’re going to sign a striker, ‘are you going to do this? Are you going to do that?’ To improve the quality of the squad it would take millions and we don’t have that and I’m very happy with the players that we’ve got.
Andi Weimann had a long term injury but he’s started the season well and I thought he had a good game tonight. He got a bit of rough treatment from their defenders…
That’s for you to write about and not me. You’re going to make comments about the officials and that’s up to you. All I look at is whether we have maximised our opportunities and we at least hit the target on most occasions which means the keeper has to make a save which is a damn site better than the ‘oohs’ and ‘aahs’ when a ball sails past the post or goes over the bar.
On another day we would do better but it’s not gone our way tonight and I’m still relatively satisfied with the application of the players and how we’ve gone about trying to win the game.
This game comes as the third in six days, do you think there’s some tiredness creeping in to some of the forward players? Chris [Martin] and Andi [Weimann] have come back off long term injuries so if you play this game later on in the season and they’re a bit fresher, maybe you take those opportunities?
No not at all. They’re two of our fittest players and I have already had a look at the numbers from tonight and their high intensity and distance figures are on par if not above other games. So no, that’s not an accurate observation.
We made four changes the other night, we made one tonight in areas so no, that makes no difference. Those are two of our fittest players so I have no qualms about that at all.
The goal you conceded, did your side switch off at the throw=in at all do you think?
We had one poor decision in terms of pressing but it broke to them and it’s off the post and a rebound. What is there to tactically pick up about that? Not a lot.
Do you need to find a different seat in the house because you Mick McCarthy sat in front of you?
No, we didn’t talk during the game.
He didn’t hear you did he because you play Cardiff next?
No, I talk through a microphone, he doesn’t need to listen to me and he’s too much of a gentleman to do that.
You scored three in your last game and clearly Martin and Andi [Weimann] are very impressive, is it a case of getting that consistency in their finishing?
Well, as I’ve already pointed out, they’ve hit the target. Andi missed the target with a decent chance in the second half but I would worry if it was similar to last year if we were accused, and rightly so, of turning down opportunities to shoot or not creating goalscoring opportunities.
At least now we are finding ourselves attacking the danger area with a lot of intent. Tonight it didn’t happen for us. I’m not one to talk about ifs and buts, but you know what I’m going to say, if one of them goes in it’s a different story, but it’s not so I won’t waste any energy overthinking it.
I know that we played okay and I know that the players commitment, drive and application and intent was right so there’s plenty to look forward positively about. But of course it remains a problem that we’ve started the season at home in the way that we would’ve liked but hey, it’s life.
You shouldn’t be too despondent…
No, listen I’m alright because I trust the players and I trust the staff and I think that our fans were really positive with the players and I hope they see an honesty that maybe has not been there. It’s a terrible thing to say but I know that the players that are here will give everything not only for themselves but for their teammates and for the club as well. That’s not a bad place to be, let me tell you that.
