Emergency services dashed to a cul-de-sac in Rainham, east London, to reports of the disturbance involving a group of people, and found a 37-year-old man lifeless last night. Despite the efforts of paramedics, he was pronounced dead at the scene.

Five suspects – including a 17-year-old girl – have been arrested on suspicion of murder and taken into custody. The other suspects are all women, aged between 21 and 48.

The investigation in the suburb continues today, reports My London.

A man who has lived on the cul-de-sac for 10 years said: “This is just so, so sad. I could never have imagined something like this happening in our neighbourhood.”

Another resident, 63, and wishes to be known as Kay, said: “I’m just stunned. Absolutely stunned. I’m speechless, how has this happened on our sleepy estate?”

A third said: “It’s normally very quiet, we’ve not been here for a very long time but there have been no problems with violence or crime.”

Work is ongoing to determine the man’s identity and ensure next of kin are informed.

A woman was also found with an injury to her wrist.

She was taken to hospital. Her condition has been assessed as non life-threatening.

Homicide detectives from the Met’s Specialist Crime Command are working to understand the full circumstances.
