More than one year of not being able to go on holiday has left us feeling rather hard done by.

But on May 17, when the second lot of lockdown restrictions will be eased, a trip away might not be such a distant dream.

Of course, most of us would love to be packing our passports and factor 50 as we jet off to sunny Spain or the south of France, but due to the very still present risk of coronavirus – as well as travel restrictions in many countries, this may not be feasible.

However, this upheaval in the travel industry and holiday plans isn’t all bad.

As a result of the difficulties in going abroad, families, single people and couples all over are embracing the ‘staycation’ life.

For many, this could mean a little camping trip or weekend away at a nice hotel in the city.

But a large majority of families are likely to pick holiday park trips for taking the kids away from home for a few days.

There are fears of course that due to coronavirus and the desire for such trips going through the roof, costs associated will have soared as well.

This is why we’ve put together a list of what it will cost you to take a family of four to the biggest holiday destinations in the South West over the coming May half term (May 31 – June 6, 2021).

For some of these destinations (looking at you Center Parcs and Pontins), they were completely sold out over half term – so we have included costs for a seven-night stay for four at the closest available dates.

Butlin’s Minehead

Butlin’s Resort Minehead is a holiday camp operated by Butlins, located in Minehead in Somerset, England.

It opened in 1962 and remains in use today. It was known as Butlin’s Minehead until 1987, and as Somerwest World from then until 1999, when it reopened as Butlin’s Minehead Resort.

For a standard apartment that sleeps up to six people – you’d be looking to pay £1452 for a seven night stay in Butlins over May half term.

This would include: double bed in master bedroom, twin beds in second bedroom, twin beds in third bedroom, kitchen, dining and lounge area.

Burnham-on-sea / Somerset

For seven nights glamping at the Haven site in Burnham-on-Sea, you could sleep up to five people in one of the fabulous tents for up to £1247.

This price covers a two bed glamping tent, with kitchen utensils, cutlery and crockery, table and chairs in the dining area with the ‘stay and play’ package.

For the same but self-organised, this would set you back £1179.

Perran Sands / Cornwall

For a seven night stay at the Haven site in Perran Sands, for a two bed chalet, that slept up to six, you’d be looking to pay £1757 for the stay and play package.

This would come with TV and DVD player, a fridge and a microwave.

To just ‘stay’, this would cost £1689.

Upon checking other sites in the South West, we found that Riviere Sands in Cornwall, Devon Cliffs in Devon, Littlesea, Rockley Park, Seaview and Weymouth Bay in Dorset and Doniford Bay in Somerset – were all sold out over May half term.

Center Parcs at Longleat were clean out of availability for May half term, and the closest dates available were not until July 19 – July 26, 2021.

This particular holiday would be for a two-bedroom woodland lodge in the Wiltshire destination.

With a TV and DVD player and even a log burner, this is reportedly a “firm favourite with families”.

They are as practical as they are popular. Sleeping up to four, each has stylish interiors and open-plan living, designed for family time.

There’s one double and one twin bedroom. Each features white bed linen, and a family bathroom. The fully-equipped kitchen includes a microwave and dishwasher so you can spend more time exploring.

In the living room are sofas, flatscreen TV and log-burning fireplace for cosy evenings. From your private patio, you can enjoy a morning coffee while wildlife-spotting, or fire up the coals in your brick-built barbecue stand when the weather’s fine.

A seven-night stay in this lovely location however would cost you a few pretty pennies, with this holiday currently going for £2,278 – it would be one for the scrapbook.

Pontins Brean Sands

Located in Burnham-on-Sea in Somerset, Brean Sands is a breath-taking West Country seaside location for holidays like they used to be. .

A seven mile award winning beach of golden sand near the stunning Cheddar Gorge, you’re sure to have a memorable time.

Pontins Brean Sands

Pontins said: “Following the government’s recent announcement on the road map out of lockdown we are planning to reopen all our Parks from Monday 17th May 2021.

“We will keep making arrangements and working towards welcoming you back to our restaurants, bars and entertainment venues for our full Pontins Holiday experience. For reservations booked prior to our reopening, we will be able to offer you a change of date for this year or offer to move your holiday to the same date next year.

“We are still experiencing a high volume of enquiries with limited resources; we will be in touch with anyone affected as soon as we can so please bear with us.

“We are looking forward to welcoming you back very soon and thank you again for your continued support.”

Pontins did not have any availability for May half term, but had a seven night stay on offer from May 29 instead.

Unfortunately the cheaper of the two available options would leave you a little short on space as it would be for a studio open plan apartment that sleeps two with a cot space – this would cost £539.

The second more pricey option however would be a club apartment that could sleep four people with a cot space – this would cost £699.

Half board rate per night is stated at £15 per adult and £7.50.
