How to remove stains – using salt

Stains are common daily annoyances. However, salt can be used as an effective means to tackle these pesky problems. Salt is highly effective and completely natural. Express.co.uk has compiled an easy guide to help you use salt to get rid of stains.

According to the Salt Institute, there are more than 14,000 ways you can use salt – which makes it one of the world’s most versatile minerals.

Due to salt’s granular texture, it has the power to do a lot more than just season food.

When it comes to cleaning, salt is an effective, cheap and natural alternative to harsh cleaners with strong chemicals.

Salt also serves as a catalyst for other ingredients, such as vinegar, to boost cleaning and deodorising action.

Tea and coffee stains

Tea and coffee are extremely popular beverages in the UK, but over time they can leave their mark on your favourite mugs.

If you put salt and a pinch of dishwashing soap into a stained mug and then use your fingers or a scrubbing brush you work the mixture into the stains.

Once you have worked the cleaning solution into the stain, rinse it off with hot water and see if it has worked to remove the stains.

Repeat the process if stains have not been removed.

Salt is an effective way to tackle bloodstains.

Simply run the blood-stained spot under cold water to prevent it from setting and sealing to the fabric.

Then prepare a thick paste of salt and cold water.

Apply this paste to the stain and allow it to sit for 10 to 20 minutes.

Salt has strong dehydrating properties which help to lift the water and the blood.

Once the time has passed, rinse the garment under cold water and then wash it as normal where you should see the fabric is now blood-free.
