Callum Borg and his partner Jessica Glover, both aged 24, and their two-year-old son were asleep when their flat in Walkden was smashed into during the early hours of Wednesday morning. Callum said he locked his partner and child in the bedroom for their safety and raced downstairs at around 4am.
He said he was then confronted in the living room by a group of four men armed with machetes and axes.
Callum suffered cuts to his arms and the group made off with the family dog Skylar – a pocket bully.
The dog owner said the thugs raced away from the scene in a white BMW vehicle.
Detective Constable Joseph Morris, from the force’s Salford District, said: “We understand this is a distressing incident for those involved, as well as for the community.
“We are fully investigating the circumstances around what happened.”
