Millions of Brits wash towels once a year and wait until it’s ‘stiff’

A shocking new survey has revealed an alarming number of people only wash their towels once a year. Showers to You surveyed 2,000 UK residents on their towel-washing habits, and garnered some pretty gross conclusions.

It found many were using their towels for longer than they should. And a third of respondents only wash their towels once every three months, which equates to over 1.5 million people (1,595,646).

Towels should be washed after three uses, bathroom experts say. However, the longer a towel is used before it is cleaned, the higher the risk of bacterial and fungal infections.

The data also shows almost one in 10 UK residents (8%) surveyed only wash their bathroom towels twice a year, equating to over four million people (4,255,056). While a third of UK residents (33%) surveyed wash their bathroom towels just once every three months, this equates to over 17 million people (17,552,107).

Showers to You also found that men are five times more likely to clean their towels annually than women. One in nine respondents (11 per cent) also said they aren’t concerned by hygiene issues caused by not washing their bathroom towels, despite going against NHS advice.

Alarmingly, one in six respondents admitted to waiting until their towel became ‘stiff’ before popping it in the wash. The company also pulled together a list of the cities where people only wash their towels every three months, or longer.

  1. Leicester (40.90%)
  2. Glasgow (40.80%)
  3. Belfast (38.10%)
  4. Sheffield (37.50%)
  5. Coventry (36.00%)
  6. Edinburgh (35.80%)
  7. Birmingham (35.70%)
  8. Nottingham (34.10%)
  9. Liverpool (33.90%)
  10. Bristol (33.30%)
  11. Bradford (33.30%)
  12. Wolverhampton (33.30%)
  13. Manchester (32.40%)
  14. Cardiff (31.70%)
  15. London (31.40%)

Leeds, Hull, Stoke on Trent, Southampton and Newcastle upon Tyne were all at the bottom of the league. Commenting on the findings, board-certified dermatologist Dr. Hamdam Abdulolah Hamed. said: “It is crucial to maintain proper hygiene in our everyday routines, including the use and care of bathroom towels.

“Regular washing of bathroom towels is important to maintain cleanliness and reduce the risk of infections.” The expert also that towels create a breeding ground for bacteria and fungi to grow, which can cause a slew of issues such as athlete’s foot and yeast infections, as well as triggering allergic reactions or skin irritations.

“Therefore, it is recommended to wash towels after every three to four uses to eliminate bacteria, dirt, dead skin cells, and allergens, ensuring optimal hygiene and minimising health risks,” Dr Hamed added.
