A Montpelier shopkeeper persistently found to run an unhygienic premises has been jailed.
In April 2019, Judge James Patrick handed Saghir Ahmed a suspended jail term for cleanliness breaches at Picton Stores, Bath Buildings.
But today (August 23, 2021) 49-year-old Ahmed, of Richmond Road, was back before the judge having pleaded guilty to another eight breaches of food hygiene regulations.
The judge told him: “In 2019 I gave you a suspended sentence regarding offences which turned my stomach.
“The new offences similarly turn my stomach.”
He jailed Ahmed for seven months, which included three months’ activation of the previously suspended jail term.
Harry Ahuja, prosecuting for Bristol City Council via video link, said Ahmed was a director of Picton Stores until November 23, 2019.
He said in February 2019 Ahmed was handed a six-month prison sentence, suspended for two years, after admitting breaching hygiene prohibition notice.
Bristol Crown Court heard in 2019 an environmental health officer visited the shop and found an array of deficiencies which included:
- inadequate pest control due to holes in the walls
- inadequate hand washing and personal hygiene
- inadequate chilled storage
- inadequate stock control
- out of date food on display
- raw meat kept with fresh food
The court heard the shop was given a zero hygiene rating and the environmental health officer found little improvement in a November visit.
When Ahmed was interviewed he declined to answer questions.
Even though he was served with hygiene improvement notices in December the shop was still found lacking, with inadequate waste disposal, holes still in the walls giving rise to a pest control hazard and ‘green’ potatoes on display, Mr Ahuja said.
Brendon Moorhouse, defending, said his client had removed himself from day to day running of the store and had employed a manager.
But when the manager left Ahmed took over the running of the shop, the court heard.
Mr Moorhouse said: “He endeavoured to the best of his ability to try and rectify the issues addressed.
“In December his wife stepped into the role and she has made some improvements.”
