New craft beer bottle shop and bar to open in Bristol

A couple with a wealth of experience in the brewing industry are opening their own bottle shop in south Bristol.

Mike Fenlon and Emily Penney met while managing King Street pub The Famous Royal Navy Volunteer in 2015 and have been working towards owning their own business ever since.

They left their latest roles at Left Handed Giant in March 2020 to open a bar together, but their plans were scuppered by the arrival of the coronavirus pandemic.

Instead of being deterred, however, they have used the past 12 months to work on their project – and they are now just one week away from finally being able to welcome the first customers.

The pair will open Alpha Bottle Shop & Tap in the Imperial Arcade, East Street on May 18, almost directly opposite where a new jazz bar is set to open later this year.

Alpha will sell a huge range of refrigerated craft beers for people to take away from both local and international breweries, as well as ciders, local spirits, natural wines and more.

The shop will also offer onsite drinking, with a “warm and welcoming” space provided for customers to sit down and enjoy a drink straight from the taps.

Seating will be available on a first-come, first-served basis and will be in keeping with Government guidance and current Covid-19 regulations.

Mike said: “We recognised that despite the forced closure of pubs and bars, people still wanted to access great beers and carefully selected products.

“There was a clear need for a business which merged the atmosphere of a craft beer bar with an epic selection of drinks from the best breweries and independent producers from around the globe.

“From working in breweries to running some of Bristol’s busiest craft beer bars, we have years of experience in the industry and a genuine love for quality products which are produced by small independent companies.”

A web shop set to launch on May 17 will provide the option for people to click and collect in store, while orders can also be shipped anywhere in the UK.

Bedminster locals will be able to take advantage of free delivery for any orders over £30 to BS3 postcodes.

Emily added: “It’s been a very long journey getting to where we are today. We’ve shed a few tears and had more than our fair share of ‘stress beers’.

“From securing the perfect venue amidst a worldwide pandemic to completing a full shop fit out, we are so excited to finally be opening our doors and welcoming people in.”
