The Government had already made face masks mandatory on public transports and in shops, as they attempted to get ahead of the spread of Omicron.
However tonight Boris Johnson confirmed tougher rules would have to come into effect in order to combat the new variant.
Downing Street lists the Plan B measures as:
- Introducing mandatory vaccine only Covid status certification in certain, riskier settings.
- Legally mandating face coverings in certain settings, such as public transport, shops, theatres and cinemas.
- Communicating clearly and urgently to the public if the risk level increases.
Boris Johnson added that employees who are able to work from home must do so from Monday December 13.
