A Bristol nurse is appealing for help after the “gutting” theft of her late grandmother’s broach and other items.
Windows of Sophie Flear’s car were smashed in the early hours of last Monday (June 7). Property, including a £1,670 Louis Vuitton handbag, was stolen from the vehicle parked on Redland Park.
Sophie, 28, has obtained CCTV footage (watch above) from the nearby Clyde pub, taken at 4.19am that day. It appears to show a man trying the door of another car, moving out of shot and then running towards Hampton Road with something in his hands.
The nurse, based at an acute mental health unit in Priory Hospital Bristol, is “absolutely heartbroken”.
She added: “I’ve worked all through Covid, and this kind of feels like a kick in the teeth. It’s really gutting.
“My grandmother’s broach, which I carry around for good luck, was in there. It’s something really sentimental I’ve had since my gran passed away six years ago. It can’t be replaced.”
The broach is gold, with a diamond-style flower design. Also taken was an £80 black Lipsy coat, with a belt round the middle. The stolen handbag — cream and brown, with a red strap — was a gift from Sophie’s parents when she graduated as a nurse.
Sophie said: “I was coming back to Bristol from a family holiday, and we weren’t back until 1am on Monday. I had to be up to go to work at 6am, so it happened between those times.
“My coat was in the passenger seat and unfortunately I left my bag in the boot. I never, ever do this and on the one occasion I did it, due to travelling and tiredness, it gets stolen.
“I woke up that morning for my shift, and when I opened the door, I saw my car’s passenger window and the window above the boot had been smashed.
“My car was in such a mess that it left the ward one nurse down that morning. I don’t think people who do things like this realise the impact it has.”
Sophie, who had to pay a £300 excess for the car damage, is urging people to contact police if they become aware of an attempt to sell any of the stolen items.
An Avon and Somerset police spokeswoman said: “We’re investigating a theft from a parked vehicle in the Redland Park area of Bristol which happened between 12am and 6am on Monday (June 7).
“Personal items belonging to the victim were stolen after an unknown offender forced entry to the vehicle.
“We’d like to hear from anyone who witnessed the theft or noticed anything suspicious in the area around the time of the incident.
“If you can help, please call 101 quoting reference 5221125651.”
