Pirates of the Caribbean 6 and Margot Robbie spin-off ‘joined by third movie for Disney+’

There have been five Pirates of the Caribbean movies to date with the latest being 2017’s Dead Men Tell No Tales aka Salazar’s Revenge in the UK. While the billion-dollar franchise has been led by Johnny Depp’s iconic Jack Sparrow across two decades. However, since the star lost his libel case in the UK courts, what his Hollywood future looks like has been far from clear.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Disney “baulked” at Pirates of the Caribbean producer Jerry Bruckheimer’s idea of allowing Depp to cameo as Jack Sparrow in a future movie.

Despite there being no official plans for the swashbuckling character to return, there are at least two Pirates movies in the works.

Firstly there’s Pirates of the Caribbean 6, the direct sequel to Salazar’s Revenge and then there’s also Margot Robbie’s female-led spin-off.

And now Giant Freakin Robot’s reliable sources exclusively claim that there’s a third Pirates movie in the works.

Apparently, this third Pirates movie, the eighth film in the franchise, will exclusively release on Disney+.

The outlet reckons it’s likely that Disney will want all three movies to be connected across a shared universe like the studio’s very own Marvel and Star Wars franchises.

Of course, without Depp’s Sparrow this will be hard but not impossible, with Giant Freakin Robot writing: “Somehow, they need to convince audiences that there is more to love in the Pirates movies, something beyond Johnny Depp if they want to convince people to see more of these movies.

“This conundrum seems to have led the studio to one conclusion: throw everything they have at it and see what sticks.”

Mads added: “But I just knew that the show was going on, and I would’ve loved to have talked to him about it if I had the chance, but I just don’t know him in that sense.”

“But they called me and they were obviously in a hurry, and I loved the script and so said yes. And I know it was controversial for many people, but that’s just the way it plays out once in a while.

“I didn’t want to copy what Johnny had done. I think he’s a masterful actor, so copying him would’ve been creative suicide. My take is different, and the look is a little different, but we’ll have to wait for the film’s release [next year] to find out.”

Release dates for the new Pirates of the Caribbean movies and their titles are TBC.
