If you liked Bodyguard and Line of Duty, chances are you’ll probably love the BBC’s latest upcoming thriller .
Showtrial, as the show has been called, has many famous faces from Doctor Who star Sharon D Clarke to Game of Thrones actor Kerr Logan.
First look pictures released by the BBC show two of the series’ characters, but they do not give much away.
If you’re looking for more sneak peeks, chances are you’ll have to wait until teasers are released by the corporation, hopefully within the next few months.
In the meantime, we’ll let you know what Showtrial is about and whether it has a release date yet. So, here we go.
When is the Showtrial release date?
So far, Showtrial has not had a release date publicly given yet by the BBC.
The series is currently being filmed in and around Bristol, and the corporation has simply said it should be out later this year on BBC One and BBC iPlayer.
What is Showtrial about?
Showtrial follows Talitha Campbell, the daughter of a rich property developer who has been accused of conspiring to murder a university student.
She is charged by police with the offence, and herself and her family are at the centre of a media frenzy.
Talitha asks her duty solicitor, Cleo, to mount a legal defence against her prosecution which is using Talitha’s gender as well as her social class against her.
Viewers will have to determine if Talitha is a killer or whether she’s a broken scapegoat.
The show will look at how politics, the media and prejudice intertwine to blur the lines as we seek justice.
Creator and writer, Ben Richards, said: “The right to a fair trial and the idea of reasonable doubt lie at the heart of a civilised society.
“Showtrial explores how they can be distorted by other factors, in a world where concepts such as fairness, doubt and reason are afforded such diminishing value.”
World Productions CEO and Creative Director, Simon Heath, added: “It’s great to be working again with Ben Richards, who uses the DNA of our true crime obsession to create a gripping fictional murder trial that shines a light on the failings of our justice system.”
Piers Wenger, Controller of BBC Drama, said: “Rich in character and truly contemporary, Showtrial follows the investigation of a serious crime as it grows from routine investigation to national talking point, charting the progress of the case and the mounting pressure on those on the inside.
“In Showtrial, Ben shows his powers as an independent thinker and an innovative storyteller, and we are delighted to be working with him and Simon Heath to bring this series to BBC One.”
