The women, one aged in her 70s and her 80s, were struck by the car yesterday at around 4.35pm in Southport, Merseyside. Emergency services rushed to the scene and the pensioners were taken to hospital, where they died of their injuries.

The next of kin have been informed, Lancs Live says.

Merseyside Police said the driver of the white Audi A3 stopped at the scene, and is assisting police with enquiries.

Roads remain closed as officers investigate the crash in the affluent Birkdale area, popular with families and young professionals.

Sergeant Mat Shaw, of Merseyside Police, said: “An investigation has been launched into this tragic incident and we are keen to speak to anyone who may have witnessed the collision.

“Similarly, if you were driving in the Lulworth Road area at the time and have any dashcam footage, please review it and get in touch if you see anything. Information you hold could be vital our enquiries.”

Anyone with any information is urged to contact police.

It’s understood paramedics from North West Ambulance Service and an air ambulance attended the scene.
